Is Scream 2022 Worth the Hype?
They say that nothing ever comes close to the first iteration of a movie… and once again that’s the case after watching the latest addition to the Scream franchise.
In early January, Paramount Pictures released a new approach to the ‘some-what’ repetitive Scream universe, and this time it’s more compelling that the last. It’s fun and entertaining on the base level, showcasing a young new cast and some good jump-scares. Once again, Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) team up against another ‘ghost face’ killer.
Lately, I’ve felt like some old franchises have tried to re-ignite the popularity flame by focusing on what made their original movies good, and in some cases it has payed off quite nicely. For example, The new Jurassic Park Saga has been a worldwide box office hit, searching for new ways to encapsulate new audiences, and staying true to themselves in the mean time. Scream 2022 does something similar, making another sequel to the 25 year old cult classic, and trying to appeal to younger audiences, which judging by the reviews on Letterboxd, they definitely did.
Although the plot has some very questionable turn of events and plot holes, the cast delivers a great performance, making this movie enjoyable and somewhat fun to watch. Scream 2022 should not be taken seriously, and I truly believe that the directors vision encapsulates this idea. The original ghost face killer story paved the way to a new type of horror, and it also influenced a big part of the comedy-horror movies (Scary Movie’s (2000) whole plot surrounds the idea of a slasher running around town targeting teenagers). If you haven’t watched it, sumerge yourself in this thriller based mystery. Don’t expect a master piece, or a retelling of a beloved cult classic. Just enjoy the show, watch some good ol’ slashing, and have fun.
I rated this movie a 4/10 overall.
